题目：Consensus and Truth-Finding in Narrative Communication
内容摘要：We study how communication protocols affect agreement and inference when people observe different noisy evidence about competing narratives. In our laboratory experiment, one of two narratives about the gender wage gap is randomly selected as the true data-generating process. Participants observe independently drawn private samples from that process and choose which narrative they believe to be true before and after communicating with someone who faces the same true narrative. We compare free-form chat with direct data sharing and a pre-chat reasoning task. We find that free-form communication generates high consensus among initially disagreeing pairs but yields little improvement in true-narrative correctness. Data sharing shifts choices toward pair-level evidence, whereas the reasoning task increases the probability of selecting the narrative best aligning with realized data but reduces the probability of consensus. The findings show that communication protocols can affect agreement, alignment with realized evidence, and recovery of the true data-generating process in distinct ways.
